The Influenza Research Institute (IRI) is an active and growing influenza research laboratory supporting cutting-edge research on RNA viruses including influenza, SARS-CoV-2, and replication-deficient ebola virus. 

We are looking for a Research Specialist who will characterize influenza and SARS-CoV-2 viruses and support other laboratory operations.

The Influenza Research Institute (IRI) is an active and growing research laboratory supporting cutting-edge research on RNA viruses including influenza, SARS-CoV-2, and replication-deficient Ebola virus. 

The research group numbers over 30 including scientists, post-docs, technicians, and grad students. We are looking for a Research Specialist who will characterize viruses and host responses to viral infection and support other laboratory operations. Laboratory operation support duties (shared with others) include routine laboratory maintenance, maintaining inventories, and supporting BSL-3 activities including equipment oversight. 

Research duties may include standard molecular biology, virology, cell biology, and immunology procedures including molecular cloning; virus isolation, amplification, and molecular characterization in cultured cells; transfections, flow cytometry, ELISAs, and other assays. Depending on the qualification of the candidate, studies in mice, hamsters, and ferrets may be involved. Opportunities for bioinformatics analysis may be available. Some of these activities may require work in BSL-3 laboratories at the IRI. The individual in this position must have an aptitude for research and good communication skills. A willingness to support a research team is important.

RESPONSIBILITIES:Develops, designs, and conducts one or more research projects and organizes daily operation of projects and specialized research areas to ensure work meets established objectives under moderate supervision.

60% Conducts research experiments according to established research protocols with moderate impact to the project(s). Collects data and monitors test results
15% Operates, cleans, and maintains organization of research equipment and research area. Tracks inventory levels and places replenishment orders
5% Reviews, analyzes, and interprets data and/or documents results for presentations and/or reporting to internal and external audiences
10% Participates in the development, interpretation, and implementation of research methodology and materials
5% Provides operational guidance on day-to-day activities of unit or program staff and/or student workers
5% Performs literature reviews and writes reports

EDUCATION:Required
Bachelor’s Degree
Preferentially in the area of molecular virology or a related field

Preferred
Master’s Degree
Preferentially in the area of molecular virology or a related field

QUALIFICATIONS:Laboratory experience with moderate to strong knowledge and experience in molecular biology is strongly desired. Cell culture experience, and/or biological safety level-3 (BSL-3) experience are desired as well, but not required . Top candidates will be trained in biosafety and infectious disease research. Excellent verbal and written communication skills are required.
