Clarence Coyl and a friend went to the Havasu National Wildlife Refuge and drove through an open gate. Fish and Wildlife officer P. Nielsen saw Coyl and ordered them to leave the refuge. Coyl proceeded to leave but was followed by Nielsen to a gas station about 20 miles away, and Nielsen demanded to see Coyl’s identification when he came out of the gas station. Nielsen then pulled out his taser and threatened to arrest Coyl; he responded by saying, “A misdemeanor? A misdemeanor, a*shole.”
Nielsen then tased Coyl, and he caught on fire because of the gasoline being pumped into his truck. “I thought I was gonna die… Believe it or not, I went into instinct to stop, drop, and roll.” Coyl received first- and second-degree burns on his hands, and the incident has led to nightmares and trauma when he is near gas stations. The Department of the Interior, which oversees the Fish and Wildlife Service, said, “A taser was deployed during this incident. Consistent with DOI policy, all such deployments undergo review, and we are unable to comment further while that process is ongoing.”
