Mila Joy dropped the receipts in black and white this week (above): In the District of Columbia, official numbers showed 674,000 registered voters against a citizen voting-age population (CVAP) of roughly 502,000. That is not a rounding error. That is a screaming red flag of bloated rolls—deadwood, movers who never got scrubbed, and who-knows-what else.
The same Election Assistance Commission data that produced those figures shows the problem is not limited to the swamp. Multiple states have reported total registrations exceeding or approaching their CVAP estimates in recent cycles. Alaska has repeatedly run over 100%. Others hover uncomfortably close. When active registrations alone sit at 86% of CVAP nationally, the inactive and outdated names still clutter the lists and create openings. This is the environment Democrats are fighting tooth and nail to preserve.
Enter the Trump Justice Department’s actual effort to clean the mess. DOJ has been demanding unredacted statewide voter registration lists so it can cross-check them against federal data, including the Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements (SAVE) system. The goal is straightforward: identify noncitizens, deceased voters, duplicates, and other ineligibles so states can do their legal duty under the National Voter Registration Act. Several Republican-led states have already used enhanced tools and started removing flagged names. That is what list maintenance is supposed to look like.
Democrats and their allied “pro-voting” groups treat this like an existential threat. They have flooded the courts with lawsuits claiming privacy violations, “disenfranchisement,” and “voter suppression.” A Biden-appointed judge in D.C. blocked the expanded SAVE system nationwide, calling it a trampling of privacy rights. Democratic senators, led by Alex Padilla, just sent a formal letter to the Acting Attorney General and DHS Secretary warning against any “large-scale voter purges” during the 90-day quiet period before the November election—and demanding DOJ drop its lawsuits seeking the state rolls. They call the SAVE program “deeply flawed” and insist noncitizen voting is vanishingly rare. Convenient.
Democrats are the party of fraud
The same crowd is unified against the SAVE America Act, which would require documentary proof of citizenship to register and photo ID to vote. House Republicans passed versions of it. Senate Democrats, with help from a few Republican holdouts, have blocked it repeatedly. Chuck Schumer and company frame basic citizenship verification as a plot to “purge eligible voters.” Translation: they prefer the current system of easy registration, slow or selective list maintenance, and maximum opportunity for ineligible ballots to slip through.
If the rolls were pristine and fraud nonexistent, cleaning them would be no big deal. Instead we get institutional panic every time someone tries to match names against citizenship databases or demand the raw lists. Excess registrations relative to citizen population are not theoretical. Noncitizen registrations, while officially rare in audited cases, keep turning up in state reviews. Dead and moved voters remain on lists long enough to matter in close races. The response from one side of the aisle is not “let’s fix it faster.” It is lawsuits, letters, media framing, and legislative obstruction.
This is not about “protecting democracy.” It is about protecting a system that has allowed bloated rolls for years. Clean rolls make fraud harder. Dirty rolls make it easier. Democrats have made their preference clear at every turn—from blocking the SAVE America Act to racing to the courthouse against DOJ’s list-maintenance push. The data from places like D.C. is not a glitch. It is the feature they are defending.
Americans who believe only citizens should vote—and that the rolls should reflect reality—should take note. The opposition is not subtle. It is total.
