What in the hell is going on?
A Texas mother is facing attempted capital murder charges after allegedly stabbing her husband and two tiny children during a horrifying early-morning attack. Police say her husband called 911 after being stabbed in the head, and officers then found their three-year-old daughter and ten-month-old baby with stab wounds to their chests.
Miraculously, both children were reported stable and expected to survive. The most infuriating detail is that police had reportedly been called to the home five separate times since March. This family came terrifyingly close to an unimaginable tragedy, and now everyone wants to know what warning signs were missed before it reached this point.
A Texas mom stabbed her husband in the head and put a knife in both of her kids before dawn on Tuesday. She is not the only one. In under two weeks, police in three states have charged or accused mothers of killing or trying to kill their own children. Two of those kids are dead. The rest are in hospitals.
Northlake, Texas. Tuesday, October 6, about 4:20 a.m.
Northlake police say Holly Leeann Flores, 37, stabbed her husband, Justin Hommel, 34, in the forehead, then stabbed their 3-year-old daughter and 10-month-old son in the chest at a house on Daylily Drive. Hommel called 911 while it was still happening. Dispatch could hear a woman screaming. Officers found him in the driveway holding the knife, blood on his head. Inside, both children were conscious and screaming, with multiple chest wounds.
All three are expected to live. Flores was treated, released, and booked into the Denton County Jail on two counts of attempted capital murder and one count of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. No bond.
Hommel told police she was in a postpartum depression. On the 911 call he asked her, while she was still on him, if this was a “postpartum thing.” The affidavit says he had already moved to sleep near the kids because her behavior worried him. Around 1 a.m. he woke to her with a lighter in the bedroom and a kitchen knife on the dresser. She shut the door on him. He went back to sleep. He woke again to the children crying, knocked, and she opened the door with the knife.
Cops had already been to that address about five times since March. Welfare checks. Overdoses. The dispatcher noted a history of welfare concerns involving CPS and the mother. Five trips. Then a knife in a baby’s chest.

Houston. September 29, about 5:45 p.m.
Houston police say a 30-year-old mother shot her 4-year-old daughter, Vivian Savella, then shot herself at a west Houston townhome on Terra Reserve Place. Vivian died at the scene. The mother was critical and is expected to survive. Police had not named her in the early reporting, and no charges had been filed while she was still in the hospital.
There had been a custody hearing that same day. Lt. Larry Crowson of HPD said the mother and child came home after it. The girl’s stepfather and a babysitter were downstairs when they heard the shots. The family statement, released through an attorney, said a judge had placed Vivian in her father Aaron’s primary care and that she was supposed to go home with him that evening. She never did. “Aaron did everything the law asks of a parent who is trying to protect his child. He trusted the courts. He followed every order. He waited for the process to work.”
Ladson, South Carolina. September 29.
Charleston County deputies and a state social services worker found 2-year-old Emory Deacon and 15-month-old Harlow Deacon dead inside a Pinewood Drive house. The coroner ruled starvation and dehydration from neglect, and classified both deaths as homicides. The girls had been dead three to five days. The family said they died on September 24.
Their mother, Justine May, 31, is charged with two counts of homicide by child abuse. She told detectives the previous two weeks were a “blur” and she could not remember the last time she fed them. She said she had been the only adult in the house.
Deputies had been to that address 13 times since August 10. They had contact with May and the girls on five of those visits and reported no signs of concern. One report says a deputy first told the dispatcher the office was no longer answering welfare checks at that address. Other officers went anyway, with DSS. The girls’ father, Zachary Deacon, and his family had been trying to see the children and said May was blocking them. Texts from the grandmother, an aunt, and the father begging for a look at the kids were already circulating before the bodies were found.
Cowpens, Spartanburg County, South Carolina. September 25–26.
Taylor Gosnell, 35, is charged with two counts of attempted murder. Deputies say she attacked her 3-year-old and her 6-year-old with a kitchen knife and a blunt object overnight. About 50 stab wounds between the two children. Some went to the bone. The 6-year-old may lose fingers and possibly part of an arm. Both were stable and expected to recover. They were found home alone.
The older child had called his grandmother and said they were hungry. She and Gosnell’s ex-boyfriend went to the house on Bud Arthur Bridge Road and called for a welfare check. Deputies got there just after 2:30 p.m. on September 26. The house was torn up. Mirrors and televisions smashed. Gosnell came back while they were there, talking fast, telling them she was seeing things. She tried to run from the ambulance and was cuffed to the stretcher. Bond denied.
She was already out on bond. In February 2024 she was charged with two counts of unlawfully placing a child at risk of harm or willfully abandoning a child. Those charges were still pending.
Four mothers. Eleven days. Texas twice, South Carolina twice. A baby stabbed in the chest. A 4-year-old shot after her father won the hearing. Two toddlers starved in a house deputies had already walked through. A 6-year-old cut so deep a prosecutor talked about amputation in bond court.
The excuse arrives on schedule. Postpartum. A blur. Visions. A bad day in family court. Some of that may be true. None of it puts the knife down or puts food in a toddler. CPS had a file in Northlake. Deputies had a file in Ladson. Gosnell already had a child-endangerment case and a bond. The Houston father did what the court told him to do and buried his daughter the same week.
The kids who lived did it because a husband got to a phone, or a 6-year-old called his grandmother, or a neighbor finally made someone open the door. The system had already been there.
