Bear Mayer was 16, broke, and out of gas money for a 1993 Land Cruiser named Jennifer. His father gave him two options: get a job or start a company. Eighteen prototypes later he had a batting glove, and the first ten major league players who wore it all came to him.
He tells Elizabeth Gore why he asked a chiropractor about the shape of a finger, how his grandfather got struck by lightning twice and gave the company its name, and why treating a retailer as a transaction was the mistake he had to unlearn.
