Investigative journalist Mariana van Zeller has spent her career exposing global black markets and trafficking networks. In her new NatGeo documentary “Super Scam Me,” she goes undercover, adopting a fake persona to intentionally become the target of a romance scam and take a deep look at scammers’ tactics and their impact on people’s lives. “I don’t think we are aware of how big of a deal it is,” says Van Zeller, noting Americans are losing an estimated billions of dollars a year to romance scammers.
