Warren Buffett is worth an estimated $150 billion. He’s also promised to divest himself of his vast wealth before he dies. Except it’s hard when the pot keeps growing. So his three children are stepping in to spread it around. Alexandre Rajbhandari explains
Warren Buffett’s three kids now face a $150 billion job: give the money away before it grows any larger.
The Oracle of Omaha cut the Gates Foundation out of the picture this summer after new details on Bill Gates’ contacts with Jeffrey Epstein.
Buffett is worth about $150 billion, almost all of it in Berkshire Hathaway stock. He has said for years he wants nearly all of it given away before he dies. The problem is the pot keeps rising. Berkshire shares keep climbing, so even after he has handed out tens of billions the total is still larger than it was when he started the big push two decades ago.
🚨 Warren Buffett just issued the most serious warning of his career
The man is 95 years old.
He’s lived through every major crisis of the last 60 years.
He just said:
“We’ve never had people in a more gambling mood than now”
He called the stock market “a church with a casino attached”
Berkshire is now sitting on nearly $400 billion in cash.
The largest cash pile any company has ever held.
This is the same man who raised cash before 2008.
The same man who told everyone to be greedy when others are fearful.
He’s not greedy right now.
He’s the most cautious he’s ever been.
The man who built one of the greatest fortunes in history is telling you the market has become a casino.
Most people will ignore him, a few will listen.
History usually rewards the few.
Every new move I make in the market gets posted on this account before anywhere else.

In 2006 Buffett made a public pledge he called irrevocable. He would give Berkshire shares to the Gates Foundation every year for as long as he lived, as long as Bill Gates or Melinda French Gates stayed active in running it. Over the next 20 years that added up to more than $47 billion in stock. The foundation used much of the money on global health programs. Buffett also co-founded the Giving Pledge with the Gateses, urging other billionaires to promise large gifts.
That annual check stopped in July 2026. Buffett announced he was sending roughly $6 billion in Berkshire shares—12 million Class B shares—to four family foundations. The Susan Thompson Buffett Foundation, named for his late wife, received the largest piece, about $4.5 billion. The other three foundations, run by his children, each got about $500 million. The Gates Foundation was left off the list for the first time since the arrangement began. Buffett said his remaining shares will go to those same four family groups by the end of 2034.

The timing followed the release of Justice Department files on Epstein. Those files showed more contacts between Gates and the convicted sex offender. Buffett told CNBC he had not spoken with Gates since the files came out. He later called the association “distasteful.” He also said he had read the material, including Gates’ congressional testimony, and found nothing “beyond what I could picture myself doing.” Buffett framed the bigger shift as practical: his children are older, he is 95 or 96, and he wants the money moved while they can still handle it. He and Gates had been friends for more than 30 years. Buffett had even resigned from the Gates Foundation board years earlier during the Gates divorce.

The Gates Foundation said it is grateful for the past support. It noted that it continues from a position of financial strength, backed by a $200 billion commitment from Bill Gates that is meant to carry the work until a planned close in 2045.
Most of the redirected money is now headed toward foundations the Buffett family already controls. The Susan Thompson Buffett Foundation has long been one of the largest private funders of abortion access and reproductive health programs in the United States and overseas. The three children each run their own groups with different focuses. Susie Buffett, the oldest, concentrates on early childhood education, mainly in Nebraska. Howard Buffett works on food security and conflict relief; his foundation has sent large sums to Ukraine and other countries. Peter Buffett’s NoVo Foundation supports community projects, Indigenous groups, and related causes. The three have already given away billions through these channels over the years.

After Warren dies, whatever shares remain go into a trust the three must run together. They have to agree unanimously on major decisions. The fortune is expected to keep growing as long as Berkshire stock rises. The siblings say they intend to give the money away during their own lifetimes rather than build a permanent organization. They have not settled exactly how they will divide the work or whether they will pool everything. One of them once told his father he did not want the responsibility. The scale is large enough that they would need to move billions of dollars a year just to stay ahead of the growth.

For the Gates Foundation the loss of the regular multi-billion-dollar transfer is a real change, even if the organization says it can continue. For Buffett’s children the practical problem is simpler and harder: three people with different ideas about where money should go have to empty one of the biggest personal fortunes on Earth without leaving most of it unspent or fighting over the details.
