Amy Acton’s Own Mother Calls Her a Liar in Ohio Governor Race
Ohio voters are hearing from an unexpected source about Democratic candidate Amy Acton: her own mother. In a video circulating this week, Donna Arthur says she is Acton’s mother and warns people not to elect her.
Arthur, who has been estranged from her daughter for decades, states that Acton has a serious problem with the truth. “She is a liar. She lies about her past. She says she grew up living in a tent. None of that is true. She’s lied her entire life,” Arthur says in the clip. She adds that her daughter needs help and that people who lie should not be governor.
Acton’s campaign confirmed the woman is her mother. The two have not spoken since Acton was about 12. Her brother, Philip Stearns, responded by accusing Republican opponent Vivek Ramaswamy of using the situation for political points. Stearns said their mother stayed with the man who abused Acton until he died.

The Childhood Story Acton Tells
Acton, a doctor and former state health director, has made her early life a central part of her campaign. She has said her parents divorced when she was 3. After that, she and her brother moved about 18 times before she turned 12. One winter, she has claimed, the family lived in a tent at a campground outside Youngstown.
She has also said her mother’s then-husband sexually abused her. In 1978, when Acton was 12, that man—Cledith Arthur—was charged with rape and indicted by a grand jury after her father reported it. Acton and her brother were removed from their mother’s home. Her mother supported the husband in court and left town with him while he was out on bond. Court records show the charges were filed. Acton has said the last time she saw her mother was at the courthouse that year.
Arthur has disputed the homelessness claim before. In a 2020 interview she denied the family was ever homeless or went hungry and questioned the abuse account. She acknowledged standing by her husband at the time.

Medical License Form and Police Calls
Republican ads have also pointed to Acton’s medical paperwork. On her 1994 application for an Ohio medical license she answered yes when asked if she had ever been treated (but not hospitalized) for “emotional or mental illness, drug addiction or abuse, or an alcohol problem.” Her campaign says that answer referred to outpatient therapy after the childhood abuse. A separate question about actual addiction or dependency she answered no. Fact-checkers have called the ads that treat the single “yes” as an admission of addiction misleading.
Police have been called to Acton’s home more than once. In 2013 her teenage daughter contacted authorities, worried her parents would get into an altercation. In August 2019, while Acton was already Ohio’s health director, officers responded to a report of a domestic dispute in Bexley. Reports indicate she had been drinking, had taken prescription medication, and was about to drive before her husband talked her out of it. Both had been drinking; her husband later said he had more. The exchange was described as verbal. No charges were filed. One account said she pulled a mirror off a wall during the argument.
Ohio. have you forgotten who Amy Acton is? She was the one who said “100,000 Ohioans had COVID, when only 5 had the flu. She was the queen of lockdowns in the USA.
Voting for this woman qualifies you for a nice heavy dose of Remdesivir. https://t.co/nsR0yp7lcV

From Health Director to Candidate
Governor Mike DeWine, a Republican, appointed Acton as Ohio’s health director in 2019. She became a familiar face during the early months of COVID-19, standing beside DeWine in daily briefings. Ohio was among the first states to close schools. Protests outside her home included armed demonstrators. She resigned in June 2020 after refusing to sign orders she opposed that would have allowed larger outdoor events. She later said political pressure played a role.
Acton announced her run for governor in January 2025. She is the Democratic nominee facing Ramaswamy in the November 2026 election. Her campaign continues to highlight the story of rising from a hard childhood in Youngstown. The new video from her mother puts that story under direct public challenge from the person who raised her for most of those years.
